While rising onion prices have been a cause for concern, the arrival of larger quantities of onions from Maharashtra and other parts are expected to bring huge relief to households in Goa and North Karnataka.

According to reports from the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), here in Belgaum, a large number of trucks have arrived at the APMC Market Yard, which also supplies onions to Goa.

Wholesale dealers anticipate that these increased stocks are expected to bring down onion prices within the next couple of days.

“More than 100 truckloads of onions have arrived at the APMC market yard since the last three days,” said Laxman Hongekar, a wholesale trader in Belgaum.

“Onion prices were soaring since the last couple of months, as farmers from Nasik and Pune districts had hoarded the crop expecting prices to soar due to a delay in monsoons. But since the monsoon has become active in Mumbai and other parts of Konkan, they have started releasing the onions into the markets,” Hongekar told The Goan.

The arrival of onions has had its impact since Tuesday, with onion prices dropping in the wholesale onion market.

The price of white onions, which ranged between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,300 a quintal, in the wholesale market here last week, has already dropped by over Rs 200-300. The price of red onions has dropped by Rs 300-500 per quintal.

Meanwhile, the wholesale prices of vegetables in the Belgaum market on Monday were as follows: tomato (Rs 15), brinjal (Rs 12), capsicum (Rs 25), green chilli (Rs 15), gowar (Rs 10-15), lady finger (Rs 10-15), beans (Rs 80-100), ridge gourd (Rs 25-30), bitter gourd (Rs 20-25), cucumber (Rs 10-15), beet root (Rs 10-12), English carrot (Rs 25-30), ginger (Rs 80-100), cabbage (Rs 40-50), Knol Khol (Rs 15-20) and coriander (Rs 12-Rs 18).
