Kavlekar & Kundaikar families celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi together in Vaddem

In Vaddem, Vasco, opposite Goa Shipyard Limited, a rare tradition continues to inspire. For generations, the Kavlekar and Kundaikar families have worshipped two Ganesha idols under the same roof at their ancestral home, symbolising unity, heritage, and devotion.
What makes this special is that even with two idols, the families have never let differences come between them. They celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi and other festivals together, earning admiration for the harmony they share.
Dilip Kundaikar recalls the origins of this custom. His father, Anant Kundaikar, was a nephew of the Kavlekar family and grew up in their home. “Back then, there was only one Ganesha idol, worshipped by the Kavlekar family for over 85 years,” he said.
Later, locals placed another Ganesha idol outside the house with a tag in Anant’s name, suggesting it was for the Kundaikar family. “At first, we did not worship it. We felt there was no need for two idols and kept it in the loft,” Dilip explained.
But the family soon faced difficulties. A priest advised them to perform rituals for the unattended idol. “We followed his advice, did the pooja and visarjan, and things began to improve,” Dilip said.
From then on, the Kundaikar family brought home their own idol for Chaturthi. “It has been over 55 years now. But we always kept both idols together in the Kavlekar house, celebrating jointly,” Dilip added with pride.
Today, the two idols in one home stand as proof of the families’ deep bond. The celebration is not about separation but about togetherness, where faith unites everyone under one roof.
“This tradition is more than just about our families,” Dilip said. “It shows that devotion can bring people together. Preserving this legacy has been a true blessing for us.”
For the people of Vaddem, the sight of two Ganesha idols side by side during the festival is a powerful reminder that faith can unite, inspire, and keep traditions alive for generations.
