Acting on the Bombay High Court at Goa’s order to crack down on illegal constructions, eight village panchayats in Tivim constituency have issued show-cause notices to violators, with some even conducting site inspections and surveys of commercial and residential structures.

The Tivim panchayat has taken the lead by serving notices to 82 individuals, followed by detailed site inspections of their structures. Officials said the findings will be placed before the panchayat body for further action.

“Notices are issued and site inspection is carried out, and the same will be placed before the panchayat meeting and necessary action will be taken,” an official from the Directorate of Panchayats confirmed.

Similarly, in Colvale, notices have gone out to 51 individuals, while the Assonora panchayat has issued 92 notices.

Assonora is notable for its clusters of long-standing commercial structures flanking the major district road, many of which have been operating for decades.

Surveys have been conducted in the area, but decisions on demolition or regularisation are still pending.

Other villages have also seen action, albeit at different scales.

Revora has issued 13 notices following surveys along the MDR road, while Camurlim served 40, Pirna 20, Sirsaim 37, and Nadora 3.

However, barring Revora, where show-cause notices were specifically issued to roadside commercial establishments in line with the High Court order, no visible follow-up action has been initiated in the other panchayats.

The Directorate of Panchayats confirmed that the ongoing drive largely focuses on roadside commercial establishments, road widening zones and structures encroaching on mandatory setbacks.

Officials admitted, however, that while surveys have been completed in several villages, the process of acting on them remains uneven across different panchayats.

The High Court had earlier pulled up authorities for their inaction against rampant encroachments and directed panchayats to initiate proceedings against violators.

With notices now being issued in multiple village panchayats across the State, it remains to be seen whether the follow-up action will be consistent or selective.
