MARGAO
The Konkani music and tiatr world was deeply saddened on Monday with the passing of Agnelo D’Costa, a much-loved singer, musician, and composer from Navelim.
Known for his soulful voice and wide range of compositions, D’Costa was a leading figure in Goa’s Konkani music scene for many years. He was a member of the popular band Day Breakers and also a pioneer in Konkani audio albums under Dinfa Productions, releasing over 25 albums. His famous works include Aircash, Rajiv Gandhi, Dubhavachi Nodor, Roddonaka Bhinaka, and Oklecho Xirap, which became household favourites among Konkani listeners.
D’Costa also made a strong mark in tiatr, Goa’s unique form of musical theatre. He sang in many productions, including the popular tiatr Futt, written and directed by Fausto V. Da Costa, which was staged widely across Goa, Mumbai, and Pune. His ability to combine emotion and melody made his performances unforgettable.
Apart from performing, D’Costa organised Konkani musical shows across Goa, giving a stage to young talent and keeping the Konkani language and culture alive through art.
The Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) expressed deep sorrow at his passing. TAG President Anthony Barbosa said, “We have lost yet another great artist of the Konkani stage. He was well known for his musical shows and albums. His passing leaves a gap that will be hard to fill.”
