Says tech best suited to address black spots which receive mixed waste from various sources
Will the Sonsodo waste management shed, that has remained idle for want of waste treatment, play host to the gasification plant proposed by Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) ?
MARGAO
Guess, what’s lining up at the Sonsodo waste management site? Could another experiment in waste treatment and disposal be on the horizon for the Margao Municipal Council’s waste dumping yard?
Well, the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) has revived the proposal to set up a 10-ton gasification waste treatment plant at Sonsodo. After floating an e-tender on behalf of the Margao Municipal Council for the installation of a 10TPD gasification technology waste disposal system in January last year, GEDA has now received the government’s nod to implement the gasification technology at the Sonsodo waste dumping site.
GEDA Member Secretary Sanjeev Joglekar informed that all decks have been cleared for the implementation of the gasification waste treatment plant at Sonsodo. “GEDA had invited e-tender in early 2024 on behalf of the Margao Municipal Council to implement the gasification plant at Sonsodo. Some issues then cropped up relating to the procedures, which have now been resolved by the government”, he said.
Asked to shed light on the gasification technology and whether the same will in any way help the Margao Municipal Council to tide over the garbage woes, Joglekar said, "The gasification plant will basically treat mixed waste, both wet and dry waste. This technology is best suited to address the issue of black spots which receive mixed waste from various sources. Since Margao Municipal area plays host to over two dozen black spots, the civic body can give a try to the technology to address the issue”.
Joglekar, however, made it clear that the final decision lies with the Margao Municipal Council.
For, the GEDA Member Secretary pointed out that while GEDA has floated the e-tender on behalf of the Margao Municipal Council to set up the gasification, the civic body will have to fund the project cost, estimated around Rs 7 crore.
To a question, Joglekar said the gasification plant can be erected inside the Sonsodo waste management shed which has remained idle for over a year now.
