The Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT) has alleged criminal negligence on the part of the government authorities in the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub fire that killed 25 people in Arpora, and demanded an impartial inquiry.
In a strongly worded statement, CRT stated the tragedy was the direct result of regulatory failure, while it also offered its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with survivors who are recovering from severe burn injuries.
“The fire at the Club is an outcome of the criminal negligence of all the government authorities who are tasked with licensing and monitoring operations in commercial establishments. By their actions and inactions, the government agencies and the business operators have made a mockery of the precious lives of those working at the club, the visitors, tourists and the lives of the local communities living in these areas. It is a clear sign of prioritising profits over people,” it said in a statement issued on Friday.
CRT added that the authorities, by their complicity and negligence, have literally put human life in the line of fire. “CRT strongly condemns the gross negligence and irresponsible behaviour of authorities at various levels, which led to the tragic Goa nightclub fire. The complete disregard for safety protocols and lack of concern have resulted in an unimaginable loss of life and property,” it further said, demanding a thorough, impartial and transparent inquiry into the incident, fixing accountability on those responsible for the lapse.
“The authorities must take immediate action to prevent such tragedies and provide adequate lifetime support to the affected families. We urge the government to ensure justice is served and necessary precautions are taken during licensing and when NOCs are given to safeguard lives,” it said.
