Public Works Department Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday said the department will soon introduce a rule requiring contractors to look after the upkeep and maintenance of works for at least five years.
He told the media that the new rule will increase costs for the government but will ensure proper upkeep and maintenance.
“I have discussed the matter with the PWD Chief Engineer to see if we can add a maintenance clause in the tenders. This will make contractors responsible for maintaining the works. We may have to pay them a little more, but it will be worth it as they will take care of the upkeep for a set period,” he said.
Meanwhile, the PWD Minister offered condolences on the death of 25 people in the Arpora fire tragedy.
He said since Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a magisterial inquiry, the government will wait for the report before taking any further action.
On rampant illegalities, Kamat said the government has ordered an audit of restaurants and other tourism establishments.
