NEW DELHI
A two-day International Janmangal Conference at Bharat Mandapam has launched a national campaign encouraging people to observe a day of fasting every month. The initiative, “Har Maas – Ek Upvaas” (one fast on the 7th of every month), was announced under the guidance of Yoga guru Swami Ramdev and Jain saint Antarmana Acharya Prasann Sagar.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who presided over the event, said the conference was a remarkable blend of spirituality and karmayoga, and would give a meaningful message to India and the world. He praised Acharya Prasann Sagar’s lifelong service to spirituality and self-development, and Swami Ramdev’s contribution to yoga and indigenous education. Birla also took a pledge to fast once a month.
Acharya Prasann Sagar said fasting is a divine means to awaken spiritual energy and purify the body, mind and soul. He said it reduces anger, deepens meditation and strengthens the body’s natural healing ability. Swami Ramdev noted that fasting is valued across all faiths and traditions and helps a person achieve clarity of mind and inner discipline.
Acharya Balkrishna said excessive eating leads to disease and that feeding the hungry can also be considered a form of fasting. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav praised Swami Ramdev for promoting yoga, pranayama and Ayurveda worldwide. Liver specialist Dr S. K. Sarin explained the scientific side of fasting, saying it boosts the body’s self-repair system and can help treat fatty liver and slow ageing.
Several dignitaries, including MPs and spiritual leaders, pledged to adopt regular fasting and encourage others to join the movement.
