In a significant move aimed at decongesting roads and improving cleanliness in Vasco, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar along with the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has launched a dedicated drive to tow away scrapped and abandoned vehicles from public spaces.

The initiative is being undertaken in coordination with the Traffic Department and is expected to continue throughout the year.

The joint effort comes in response to long-standing complaints by citizens and business owners about derelict vehicles occupying valuable parking space, obstructing traffic, and contributing to visual and environmental pollution.

Speaking about the initiative, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said, “The growing number of abandoned vehicles in the city has been a major concern for residents. They not only block essential parking areas but also pose safety and hygiene issues.”

“We have now taken this step in coordination with the traffic police and municipal authorities to ensure that Vasco is kept clean, safe, and free from congestion.”

Salkar also warned that owners of such vehicles will be held accountable.

“Towing expenses incurred by authorities will be recovered from vehicle owners. People cannot leave their junk on the streets and expect the system to turn a blind eye,” he added.

MMC Chairperson Girish Borker confirmed that the campaign will be an ongoing one, not just a temporary measure.

“We are committed to reclaiming public spaces that have been taken over by rusting and unused vehicles. This drive will continue throughout the year,” Borker stated.

“We request all councillors, residents, and local activists to report any such vehicles lying abandoned in their wards or neighbourhoods. Their support will help us achieve our goal faster,” Borker said.

"Municipal workers, assisted by traffic personnel, have already started identifying and tagging such vehicles in various parts of the town, including busy market areas, residential colonies, and near government buildings. The first phase of the operation has seen the removal of several two-wheelers and four-wheelers that had been lying unattended for months,"added Borker.

The initiative has been welcomed by several locals who believe that it will go a long way in restoring order and cleanliness to the town’s streets.
