Chapoli Dam, the lifeline of Canacona, began to overflow from its spillway and in the process, the Chapoli rivulet sprang to life on Thursday evening.
According to WRD sources, the Chapoli Dam, which recorded 38.35 RL on Wednesday and a storage of 1127.21 ham, began to overflow as the reduced level rose to 38.80 RL (Reduced Level) at about 4.30 pm on Thursday.
The dam starts overflowing when the reduced level exceeds 38.75 RL.
Incidentally, with over 92 mm of rainfall since morning and a seasonal rainfall of 2,411 mm, the dam began to overflow from its spillway.
With the dam overflowing, the Chapoli rivulet gets activated and water level increases in the Devabhaga-Palolem river ahead.
Chapoli Dam is the only source of irrigation for nearly 50% of paddy, sugarcane and other cultivations in the taluka and caters to the water needs of over 70% of the taluka for domestic purpose.
