As the Crime Branch (CB) began its investigation into the Curchorem sex scandal a day after taking over the case from local police, the state’s police chief said the move was due to the sensitivity of the matter and the need for a more focused probe.
Director General of Police Alok Kumar, responding to media queries on Thursday, said the transfer was meant to ensure a thorough and coordinated investigation, given the serious nature of the allegations and their possible impact on law and order.
“The matter is sensitive and requires a focused, in-depth probe. There are several reasons for handing it over to the Crime Branch — including the need for a detailed investigation to maintain law and order and to protect the confidentiality of the victims,” he said, adding that the Goa Police had acted fairly and promptly so far. “The investigation is underway, and any significant developments will be shared in due course,” Kumar told reporters.
He also sought to reassure the public about the integrity of the process. “There should be no doubt in the minds of the people regarding the probe,” he said.
Police said the CB would follow all leads as part of its inquiry.
Soham Naik, son of BJP councillor Sushant Naik, is currently in police custody in connection with the alleged scandal.
Preliminary reports state that the 20-year-old allegedly engaged in sexual relationships with several minors, filmed the encounters, and then used the clips to threaten the victims into silence.
