As electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the country and major recycling of e-waste is carried out in the non-formal sector using primitive and hazardous methods, adequate legislative measures and cost-effective, environmentally friendly technological solutions would be needed to address the issue.

To highlight the importance of the same, the Ecotiva club of Don Bosco College organised an awareness program on ‘Sustainable management of E-waste: Technology can be recycled too’ to commemorate the International E-waste Day (October 14).

The speaker Sushant Figueiredo from ‘Karo Sambhav’ delivered a session on co-creating sustainable solutions for waste management.

An environmental consultant with expertise in e-waste, biomedical waste and plastic waste management, Sushant introduced the different elements that are categorised as e-waste and its toxic nature.

He illustrated the medals made up of e-waste for the recent Tokyo Olympics and gave an insight into how this waste can be recycled to make more magical products.

Sushant said, "The most imperative method is disposal at correct points, segregation and treating it. As India is the third largest generator of e-waste, sustainable methods should be followed,” and pointed out the problems faced by people working at different sites and their exposure to the harmful toxic elements.

Sustainable measures like disposing of the e-waste, giving it to the right source with well-defined legal methods and documentation, having e-waste drives, and segregation methods will be helpful.

The programme was attended by students and staff members and was organised under the guidance of Glenda Mascarenhas, faculty in-charge of the Ecotiva club.
