“During the demonetisation drive, the image of bank workers had been diminished after people started complaining about the way we were working. Though it was not an issue in Goa, it was a big concern in the rest of India. We wanted to protest then but didn’t go ahead as we didn’t want to cause any inconvenience,” he said.
In a statement, association general secretary AM Pereira said, “When the whole country had witnessed the outstanding work done by the employees and officers during the post-demonetisation rush period in the branches by working day and night, even the compensation to be paid to the staff is not paid in full. There are many other important issues which are being ignored by the management and the Government.”
“There are lakhs and crores of loans that have yet to be paid, thus making them Non Performing Assets (NPA), they had instead decided to do after demonetization. There are a lot of cases where many of these loans are simply waived off,” he said.
As an immediate demand, the association has asked that anyone who hasn’t repaid their loan should be treated as a criminal offence and their names should be published.
GBEA have also said they were against the merger of State Bank of India with its associate banks which include State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore.
