A Nigerian national was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, four foreign nationals deported after conviction, and 35 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act ended in convictions during 2025, official police data revealed.
The foreign nationals – hailing from Russia, Lebanon, Nigeria and Britain – were deported after completion of due legal procedures.
During the year, the police registered 163 NDPS cases and seized narcotic substances worth Rs 78.48 crore. As many as 212 accused were arrested, including 32 foreign nationals.
In 2024, the police had registered 162 NDPS cases, seized drugs worth Rs 9.91 crore and arrested 192 accused, including 24 foreign nationals.
Police said securing convictions remained a key focus to create an effective deterrent. Owing to sustained efforts by investigating officers, coordination with State prosecutors and continuous monitoring of trials, 35 NDPS cases resulted in convictions during the year.
A total of 37 accused -- comprising 32 Indian nationals and five foreign nationals -- were convicted. Courts awarded sentences ranging from several months to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, depending on the quantity and nature of the narcotic substances involved.
The Goa Police said surveillance has been strengthened, intelligence-led operations enhanced and strict vigilance maintained over suspected individuals and their activities.
ANC seizes drugs worth `65 L from Mapusa local
PANAJI: The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Goa Police seized narcotic substances worth Rs 65 lakh approx from a Mapusa resident during a raid conducted in the early hours of Thursday.
Police identified the accused as Afnan Ghori who was allegedly found in possession of ecstasy powder. During his house search, a large quantity of drugs, including ecstasy, ganja and cocaine were found and subsequently seized.
ANC have also initiated financial investigations to trace the money trail and transactions involved in the procurement and distribution of the seized drugs. The raid was conducted under the supervision of SP (ANC) Sunita Sawant and SP Nerlon Albuquerque.
