Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirokdar on Friday said that the government is taking concrete measures which would cater to the water requirements of Goans, both for drinking and irrigation till 2047.
Launching work on the cleaning and beautification of a water tank at Gogol Housing Board on Friday in the presence of BJP State president Damu Naik and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Shirodkar said though lakhs of litres of water is flowing into the sea during the monsoons for want of that much storage facility. He, however, said that the government has launched a host of projects that would take care of the water requirements of Goa till 2047.
He said lakhs of square metres of fields have been brought under cultivation across the State with the irrigation facilities.
While launching the de-silting of the water tank at Gogol Housing Board at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, the WRD Minister said the government has so far desilted and cleaned up over 150 water tanks, ponds and lakes in the last two years.
“The WRD department not only caters to the water requirements of the State, but also protects the environment and the ecology,” he added. He said the de-silting of the Gogol water tank will be completed before Ganesh Chathurti to facilitate immersion of idols.
