Acting on a complaint regarding discharge of molasses into an excavated pit near the damaged tank at Shristhal, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has directed the contractor to remove and transfer the contents for further disposal in two days.

According to sources, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is reported to have convened a meeting with officials regarding the discharge of molasses into an excavated pit and directed officials to remove the discharged molasses.

During an inspection conducted on Monday evening, the GSPCB had made some critical observations including odour emanating at the site.

Incidentally, the board had earlier granted approval for transportation of the molasses and disposal of the non-hazardous waste on November 13, as per the plan of action submitted by Renuka Trade Link vide their letter dated November 12.

Following an agreement between NTS Blenders and Distillers Pvt. Ltd. and Renuka Trade Link for handling/transportation/disposal of the spent wash molasses stored in the molasses storage tank, the GSPCB has directed the compliance of the Plan of Action submitted to the Board by Renuka Trade Link for transportation of molasses and disposal of non hazardous waste particularly ensuring that no waste is disposed of in the open or in the drains.

“The molasses also should be completely removed and transferred for disposal. The recovery of the same should be completed within 2 days and the land restored to its original form. And a completion report to be submitted to the office within 2 days,” stated the GSPCB.
