Independent push in Velim: Frank banks on seafarer support

GSAI President Frank Viegas has thrown his hat in the ZP ring by filing his nomination papers as an independent.

MARGAO
President of the Goan Seamen Association of India and Chinchinim Sarpanch Frank Viegas has filed his nomination papers for the Velim Zilla panchayat seat as an Independent.

He was accompanied by members of the Chinchinim panchayat members, besides members of the Goan Seamen Association of India.

In fact, GSAI founder president Dixon Vaz has appealed to the seafaring community from Velim constituency to vote and elect Frank to the South Goa Zilla Panchayat body. “Velim constituency is the land of seafarers. I appeal to the seafaring community and their relatives to support Frank in the election,” he said.

Dixon recalled that Frank has played a major role in addressing the issues plaguing the seafaring community since the time GSAI was formed over a decade ago.

GSAI founder member Benny D’Costa said that people are supporting Frank for the Velim seat for the simple reason that the Congress party has not fielded a candidate from the general category for the election. “Velim seat is not reserved this time round. However, the Congress has decided not to field a candidate from the general category, but to re-nominate sitting ZP member, who was elected from the reserved category,” Benny said.
