MAPUSA

Airports are known to be high-security areas and yet, an accused managed to escape from the custody of a Goa Police team in a dramatic manner at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport in Mumbai on Wednesday and then escaped from their clutches a second time from a taxi outside the airport.

The Goa Police team was left red-faced after arresting two accused in Saharanpur, UP in connection with a case of extortion of Rs 30 lakh from a Delhi-based businessman in Mapusa.

CRIME, ARREST

In August 2023, Rs 30 lakh was extorted from a businessman after some persons pretended to be officers of Narcotics Bureau in Delhi. In this case, Mapusa Police had registered a case under Sections 342, 170, 323, 506(2), 389 and 34 of IPC.

In March, the police arrested two accused, Nivedita Sharma (29) of UP and Bhuvan Arora (35) of Uttarakhand, while two other accused Imad Wasim Khan (32) of UP and Faizan Khan (27) of UP were absconding.

Mapusa police received reliable information that the two absconding accused were in Saharanpur, UP. Accordingly, two teams from the Mapusa Police had left for UP and both accused were arrested on June 17.

Both police teams had plans to fly from Delhi to Goa along with the suspects. Since they could not get tickets on the same flight, one police team escorting Imad Wasim Khan decided to fly from Delhi to Mumbai and then take the connecting flight from Mumbai to Goa.

ESCAPE

A two-member police team along with Imad arrived at Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport in Mumbai on Wednesday at around 6 am.

As one policeman was seeking details from airport staff about Terminal 1, where they were to catch a flight to Goa, Imad managed to break free from the other policeman and escape. The Goa police team chased him in the airport but he managed to exit the airport and even got into a taxi outside the airport.

The Goa police team managed to spot the accused and dragged him out of the car. The accused, however, fought off the police and taking advantage of the heavy rain, Imad jumped off a flyover and on to another road, where he managed to escape from their clutches a second time.

Acting on a complaint, the Sahar-Mumbai police have registered a case against Imad Khan under Sections 224 and 323 of IPC.

The escape of a suspect from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport in Mumbai has not only exposed the Goa Police but has also exposed lapses in the airport's security system.
