Identified! 55 mishap-prone sites

PWD carries out remedial measures * 36,322 cases booked in just 45 days this year

Based on analysis of accident data from 2010 to 2014, traffic police have identified 55 major accidents spots in the State, 27 of which are in North Goa and 28 in South. Of these 38 are on National Highways and 17 at other places.

The PWD has carried out remedial measures at most of the accident prone spots with short term measures like sign boards, road markings, speed breakers etc.

"The road has been widened wherever land is available", Chief Minister, Laxmikant Parsekar said in response to a question tabled by Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar.

Spots that were identified as accident prone in North Goa include the Kala Academy junction in Panjim, Bambolim and Siridao slope, Guirim cross, Karaswada junction, Sangolda panchayat junction slope and the O’Coqueiro junction and the bazaar in Porvorim.

In South Goa, areas identified include KTC bus stand, Margao, Near Navelim church four road junction and Monte junction in Colva, the Dabolim Airport junction, Cortalim cross, Agnel Ashram and the Mangueshi bypass.

Other speed calming measures implemented by the department include rumbler strips and speed limits. Long term measures required land acquisition and therefore it is taken up in phases.

It has also been revealed that as a means of preventing and controlling road accidents, traffic police have this year (till February 15, 2016) booked 36,322 cases under the Motor Vehicle Act. In addition, they have also issued 1,299 no tices to violators this year.

Last year 3,19,123 cases were booked under the MV Act and 9,723 notices were issued to traffic violators.

Drunk driving cases booked last year totaled 3,675 and this year’s figure stands at 232. Violations captured on CCTVs installed in Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Quepem and Sanguem for 2015 were 15,744 violations and this year 2,553 violations were captured.

In 2015, a total of 97 cases were recommended for suspension of driving licenses of involved in serious or fatal accidents while 2016 had a total of 4 cases.

Police have also involved awareness as their major means to reduce the number of deaths on the road, which this year has already reached 59. Last year the department registered 316 deaths, most of which occurred on National Highways.
