The monsoon rains, which turned patchy in the last two weeks of July, is expected to gather pace in a week or two, even as the weather department has informed that Goa may see an increase in rainfall activity on Aug 5 and 6 with possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Due to the possibility of very heavy rainfall, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange colour warning for Friday and Saturday.
The State has witnessed less rainfall activity from July 16 onwards, even as the daily average rainfall consistently reported below normal value.
“Rainfall has been weak for the past two weeks. But we are expecting some changes in the weather from Wednesday (Aug 3) onwards. There is cyclonic circulation over the coast of South Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Also, a shear zone formation is reported at around 11 degree latitude. The indications are that in the coming days the shear zone movement will be towards north,” said senior IMD official, Rahul Mohan.
He said due to the shear zone formation the rainfall activity is expected to increase over Goa on August 5 and 6.
“Heavy rainfall is predicted on August 4 over isolated places and rainfall activity is expected to increase on August 5 and 6 with very heavy rainfall expected in isolated places on these two days. In view of very heavy rainfall, an orange colour warning is issued over Goa on August 5 and 6,” he said.
He also informed that the State is expected to continue getting heavy rains for three more days after August 6.
The fishermen are warned not to venture into the sea as squally weather was expected off the coast of Goa.
The IMD official further informed that the monsoon activity in the State is expected to pick up after a week or two.
