Locals push for channel to drain sewage water

Sewage water discharged by a storm water nullah stagnating along the Margao railway tracks.

MARGAO

A day after The Goan highlighted how raw sewage water is getting accumulated along the Margao railway tracks, posing nuisance and health hazard to the citizens, officials of the Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) inspected the storm water nullah.

If sources are to be believed, the Margao Municipal sanitary section was also told to inspect the site in question, but the moot question remains answered – when would the government agencies or the Konkan Railway deploy heavy machinery to make way for the stagnant water to flow towards the other side of the railway tracks?

Officials pointed out that there cannot be any short term measure to stop the flow of raw sewage at the storm water nullah given that parts of Margao city are still not connected to the underground sewage line. Locals, however, have called for the deployment of heavy machinery along the railway tracks to make way for the sewage water to flow into the adjoining nullah.

The SIDCGL officials were welcomed at the storm water nullah with foul sewage odour, indicating that all isn’t well along the railway tracks. Local residents requested the officials to put up a note saying the only temporary solution available for the authorities is to deploy heavy machinery to make a channel for the stagnant water to flow.

“There was a cross drainage under the tracks, which used to carry the sewage water emptied by the nullah along the railway tracks. Since the time the cross drainage is blocked, water does not flow on the Khareband side of the tracks. It is not possible to shut the trains to repair the cross drainage. Hence, the only option left now is to make a water channel for the smooth flow of the stagnant water,” informed a resident.
