Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar on Saturday said the much-awaited Goa-Maharashtra coastal highway work would start soon, adding that Maharashtra would tie up with Goa to promote Marathi and develop tourism infrastructure projects.

Kesarkar was speaking to reporters in his arrival at Dabolim Airport from Mumbai, where he attended the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh Chaturthi celebration.

"We will have the much-awaited Goa-Mumbai coastal highway and this will help people reach Goa in 7-8 hours. This will be in addition to the four-lane highway where work is presently in progress.”

“We are also trying to tie up with Goa government to promote and develop Marathi language and we will spend huge money to promote Marathi in other parts like Indore, Gwalior and even Goa. We are also trying to have a tie up with Goa to jointly develop tourism infrastructure," said Kesarkar.

Kesarkar said there has been a lot of development taking place after induction of the new ministers.

"We have also given relaxation to various religious festivals. I have just arrived from the Visarjan of Lalbaugcha Raja which saw over 1 lakh devotees attending the function. We are going to restore the past glory of Maharashtra," said Kesarkar.

Kesarkar said the Maharashtra government was planning to give free notebooks along with text books.

"Books will be divided into three parts so that the weight of the school bag is naturally reduced to one third and we are experimenting how a student can carry only one notebook instead of three books. We are also giving preference to the New Education Policy, where professional education can be started at a young age," said Kesarkar.

Kesarkar added that new projects are being taken up in Maharashtra.

"We have a lot of infrastructure projects in the pipeline that includes the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway at a cost of Rs 36,000 crore, the trans-link Harbour project connecting Mumbai to Nava Sheva," said Kesarkar.
