Manipal Hospital Goa has carried out the State’s first successful Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) procedure, marking a major step forward in heart treatment in Goa and Konkan. The announcement was made on Sunday to mark World Heart Day.
The case involved a 77-year-old man, Mahesh (name changed), who was suffering from severe mitral regurgitation and chronic heart failure. He also had a history of bypass surgery, multiple angioplasties, diabetes, liver cirrhosis and early kidney disease. Open-heart surgery was considered too risky, so the safer TEER procedure was chosen. The treatment was performed using the MitraClip device under the leadership of Dr Nikhil Sonatakke, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Disease, with support from a multi-disciplinary team.
“This is the first TEER procedure in Goa. It is a safe and minimally invasive option for elderly patients with complex valve disease and high surgical risk. Patients will no longer need to travel outside Goa for such advanced treatment,” said Dr Sonatakke.
Hospital Director Surendra Prasad said the case highlighted the challenges of treating patients with multiple health issues and underlined the hospital’s commitment to offering advanced, multi-speciality care under one roof.
The hospital’s cardiology team also discussed the rising burden of heart disease due to lifestyle changes, delayed diagnoses and other illnesses. They stressed the importance of awareness, early detection and timely treatment. Manipal Hospital said the availability of TEER locally means Goa is emerging as a hub for advanced cardiac care.
