A large number of dead fish were found floating in the Mala Creek in Panaji on Saturday, raising serious environmental concerns among local residents.
According to sources, over 1,000 fish were discovered dead, triggering panic in the area. Locals suspect contamination or poisoning, noting that the fish appeared healthy the previous evening.
A local resident, Datta Palekar, said the incident happened last year too. “This happened last year also, where we see a large number of fish dying overnight. Nobody knows the exact cause behind it,” he said.
He further stated that fishing activity had taken place at the creek the previous night and the situation appeared normal at the time. “By morning, all the fish were found dead,” he added.
Residents also expressed concern that no government officials had visited the site to assess the situation. They have urged authorities to take immediate action, investigate the cause, and clean the creek, warning that the decomposing fish could soon create a public health hazard for those living nearby.
