Cites sharp decline in vocations, says majority of sisters ageing, unable to continue running homes
PANAJI
The Missionaries of Charity (MC) has explained that a sharp decline in vocations has led to the closure of its home in Panaji, after having offered its services at the institution for nearly 50 years.
In a statement issued from Kolkata on Monday, MC Superior General Sr Mary Joseph MC stated that the decision to close their house in Panaji had been taken after much prayer and discernment.
“We are grateful to God who brought Mother Teresa and Assistencia Goa together for the purpose of serving His poorest of the poor in Panaji. Since 1976, it has been our privilege in Panaji to serve our brothers and sisters suffering from material want, physical infirmities and spiritual needs,” stated Sr M Joseph.
“Now, however, we are finding it difficult to continue our service because of a sharp decline in vocations. While there are fewer younger sisters, the majority of sisters are growing in age and facing restrictions because of sickness. They are now unable to continue running homes for the elderly and disabled men and women.”
“As a congregation, therefore, we have been consolidating the available human resources by closing some houses and reinforcing others.”
Sr M Joseph admitted that they have also been finding difficulties in maintaining the current house in Panaji in a condition that is safe and suitable for the people.
“Most of the ladies who had been residing in the Panaji home will be cared for in the three other houses of the Missionaries of Charity in Goa: Quepem, Carambolim and Cotto-de-Fatorpa.”
“The sisters in Carambolim, which is not far from Panaji, will continue to reach out to the poor who had been served by the sisters in Panaji,” stated Sr M Joseph.
Acknowledging the support of the Assistencia Goa and the archdiocese, Sr M Joseph said they are returning the Panaji house to Assistencia Goa “with much gratitude”.
“Thank you, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, the clergy and religious of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, all volunteers and benefactors, friends, well-wishers, especially the members of Assistencia Goa. We keep in our grateful prayers all those who have supported, guided and helped our sisters with selfless dedication and generosity over the years,” stated Sr M Joseph.
