Panaji police have arrested an orthopaedic surgeon from Hyderabad, Telangana, for allegedly cheating a Goan jeweller by showing a fake payment screenshot to take gold ornaments worth Rs 1.41 lakh.
According to Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta, jeweller Tejas Salkar, owner of Aurum Jewels in Panaji Market, complained that on August 11, the accused, Mirza Sheraz Alibaigh, bought one gold chain (2.75 g), a short gold mangalsutra (7.7 g), a gold Ganesh locket (0.85 g), a pair of gold earrings (1.48 g) and another gold locket (1.87 g).
“The accused pretended to have paid Rs 1,41,157 through RTGS and showed a fake screenshot to make it look like the payment was done. However, no such transaction was made in the jeweller’s name,” the officer said.
Police arrested the accused on Tuesday and recovered all the gold ornaments. The initial investigation found that he is allegedly involved in seven other similar cases registered in different states.
