PORVORIM
After eight years and several delays, the new market complex of Goa Housing Board (GHB) near Hanuman Temple at Porvorim has finally been completed and will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on August 16.
The new Porvorim market complex has 94 shops, 27 offices, conference hall, community hall, marriage hall, restaurant and parking facilities.
Then chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had laid the foundation stone for the Porvorim market complex in February 2013 and construction work began in March 2014.
However, residents had gathered at the site on April 29, 2014, and stopped the work opposing the project which was near a temple. Following Parrikar’s intervention, the work was resumed in August 2014.
The project was supposed to be completed within 18 months, but due to financial constraints, the work got held up and the project missed a number of deadlines.
When contacted, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the old Porvorim market building in Housing Board (GHB) colony has become dilapidated and was on the verge of collapse.
“On two occasions, portions of the roof slab collapsed during the monsoons but luckily nobody was injured. The new Porvorim market complex was constructed and shopkeepers in the old market will be shifted to the new market,” said Khaunte.
Khaunte said since there is no playground for the youth of Porvorim, he had requested the GHB to develop a ground in front of the new market complex.
“This ground will be opened for the public on August 16. With the inauguration of the new market complex, the long-pending need of residents in Porvorim will be fulfilled,” said Khaunte.
