7.5 lakh conventional meters to be replaced

Amid growing concerns over the rollout of Smart Prepaid Meters, the Electricity Department has launched a state-wide consumer awareness drive to educate citizens about the proposed transition.
Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Goa will replace over 7.5 lakh conventional electricity meters with Smart Prepaid Meters in a phased manner.
In a statement, the department said the initiative aims to ensure consumers are well informed about the technology, its functioning, and its benefits before installation begins in their respective localities.
As part of the first phase of outreach, a large-scale workshop was organised for Energy Clubs, engaging students and teachers from more than 100 schools across the State. The session was conducted by Nodal Officer Mayur Hede.
During the workshop, students were introduced to the working of Smart Meters, their technical features, and the ways in which they empower consumers through enhanced monitoring and transparency. Informational guides and FAQs were also distributed to participating schools to help spread awareness among households and local communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Hede said Smart Metering represents a significant reform aimed at strengthening transparency, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing consumer services in Goa’s power sector.
“Students represent the future of our society, and it is essential that they understand how such technologies function and how they impact daily life. When young minds are informed, they help build responsible and aware communities that support progress,” he said.
The school engagement forms part of a broader state-level campaign under the Smart Meter Pakhwada, organised by the Ministry of Power, which seeks to reach consumers through workshops, educational institutions, and public information initiatives.
