The ‘Raj Bhavan Annadhan’ scheme was launched by Rajendra Arlekar, Governor of Kerala, in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai presided over the ceremony.
A cheque of Rs 1.2 lakh was handed over to office-bearers of the Goa Street Providence organisation.
The launch event was held at the Old Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, on Sunday.
Arlekar said that the books written by Governor Pillai open a window for readers, giving them new ideas, perspectives and knowledge. He added that reading builds empathy.
Praising Pillai’s work, Arlekar said Goa is lucky to have a Governor like him, who always works for the welfare of the people. He described Pillai as the finest Governor he has seen.
Arlekar added that Pillai’s work at Raj Bhavan has set an example for other Governors across the country by helping people in need. He said everyone should follow this path.
Chief Minister Sawant said the Raj Bhavan Annadhan scheme is unique and only seen in Goa. He praised the Governor for visiting remote parts of Goa to understand the life of common people through his various yatras.
Talking about the rising number of kidney cases in Goa, Sawant advised patients to follow a healthy diet to manage their condition and avoid further health issues.
Speaking about the Union Government’s work, Sawant mentioned the eSanjeevani National Telemedicine Service, saying it is a step towards providing equal access to healthcare for all. He said eSanjeevani helps people connect easily with doctors and specialists.
Governor Pillai spoke about how he has managed to implement various schemes through Raj Bhavan and thanked the Chief Minister for his support.
Talking about the iconic slogan ‘Jai Hind’, Pillai said it was suggested by a Muslim soldier and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose accepted it.
Under the Annadhan scheme, the Governor will donate the royalty earned from his books for this good cause.
Financial help from the Governor’s Discretionary Funds was also given by the Chief Minister to about 40 patients undergoing cancer treatment and dialysis.
Sanjeev C Gauns Dessai, Secretary to the Governor, welcomed the guests. Mihir Vardhan, Special Officer, introduced the scheme and Bosco George gave the vote of thanks.
