Sao Joao was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and religious fervour across various parts of Vasco on Tuesday, drawing large crowds and vibrant participation from all communities.
The day began with special prayers at local churches, followed by joyous processions led by brass bands that made their way to celebration venues and water wells across the town.
One of the most prominent celebrations was held at Vaddem, where people came together in large numbers to take part in the age-old tradition of jumping into wells—symbolic of joy, renewal, and the monsoon season.
A festive spirit engulfed the town as people were seen wearing colourful Kopels—floral and fruit-laden headgear—and chanting “Viva Re Sao Joao” while dancing to traditional music. The wells in the area became the centre of activity, with youth and adults alike enthusiastically leaping into the water as onlookers cheered them on.
Many venues also featured artificial rain showers and rain dance zones, accompanied by music and DJs. A variety of traditional Goan dishes, including sannas, sorpotel, pulao, and patoleos, were served in buffet-style spreads.
At Vaddem, a locality known for preserving Goan customs, the celebrations were particularly notable. Social activist Gracias Coutinho, who helped organise the event, said the area is home to around 23 wells, though the community chose one for the symbolic jump.
“This Sao Joao function is well known in our locality. We begin by offering prayers at the Cross and then continue with the rituals. People of all communities come together for this feast, and that’s what makes it so special,” said Coutinho.
Locals praised the inclusive nature of the celebrations, highlighting how Sao Joao has evolved into a cultural festivity that transcends religious boundaries. From traditional rituals to modern entertainment, the event showcased the essence of Goa's communal harmony and festive spirit.
