Vice Chairperson of ESG and Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo on Wednesday appealed to Goans not to sell agricultural land and to consume homemade food instead of hotel food.

Lobo also encouraged farmers to use organic manure instead of depending on chemical fertilizers in farming.

“Stop selling your fields. Preserve the farmland for your family and the next generation. A lot of Goans have the tendency to sell their fields for a price. We need to preserve our fields and produce food for our consumption,” Lobo said.

The Siolim MLA was addressing a gathering at a function to inaugurate a vermicomposting unit at Kamat Dairy in Assagao in the presence of Assagao Sarpanch Hanumant Naik, Zonal Agriculture Officer (Bardez), Sampatti Dhargalkar, President of Gomantak Goseval Mahasang, Kamalakant Tari and Assagao Farmer Group member Erwin Fonseca.

Continuing, Lobo said the government was promoting agriculture in a big way and providing subsidies for various farming activities.

“We also have a field in Parra. We have cultivated a range of vegetables which we use for personal consumption and even send it to our hotels,” she said.

Stressing on the importance of organically produced food, she said health was wealth and eating good food was of utmost importance.

“You are what you eat. You will be healthy when you eat organic food. Most of the veggies which come from Karnataka are chemically produced and treated. We need to produce our own food,” she said.

Lobo also said that eating homemade food was the best.

“Eat at home instead of the hotels. It is healthier. Who knows if the veggies served in hotels are properly washed or not?” she said.

ZAO Sampatti Dargalkar congratulated the Kamats for thinking out of the box and stepping into dairy farming.

She said the government was providing several schemes to boost farming activity and offered her help to those who come forward with new ideas in farming.

Member of Assagao Farmers Club, Erwin Fonseca said India’s economy was agriculture-based and urged people to focus on agriculture and go green.
