With instances of unknown persons flashing laser lights during the night at flying aircraft coming to light, South Goa district Collector Jyoti Kumari has warned that such acts are illegal and amount to an offence punishable under the law.
In a statement, the District Collector pointed out that instances have been reported that some unknown person has flashed a laser light during night flying aircraft which has the potential to cause temporary blindness to pilots while they are in the critical stage of flight and preparing for landing.
"While the laser beams may appear small on the ground, the illumination expands by the time it reaches the cockpit and the dazzling effect on pilots can lead to inadvertent hazardous situations which is a serious concern,” she said.
Considering the serious threat to aviation safety concerns, to curb such activities and in the larger public interest, the South Goa district Collector has directed the general public and tourists to refrain from flashing or pointing any laser beam/light, search lights etc on any aircraft to avoid any untoward incident leading to inadvertent hazardous situations thereby endangering the lives of hundreds of people.
The Collector has invited further attention from the general public that such an art is illegal and amounts to an offence punishable under the law.
