Following a series of drowning incidents in rivers across Sattari taluka, authorities have started taking steps to ban swimming in rivers, waterfalls and other water bodies.

In this connection, the Morlem panchayat has prohibited swimming at the ‘Ubho Guno’ river stretch and nearby areas under its jurisdiction.

The panchayat has warned that action will be taken against those who violate the order. Warning signboards have also been placed along the riverbanks.

Over the past few months, several drowning incidents have been reported at different river stretches in Sattari taluka, raising concern among local residents. Many people who do not know how to swim visit the rivers to escape the summer heat.

In some cases, people under the influence of alcohol have lost control and drowned in the river. Local residents have also faced inconvenience because of such incidents.

Despite repeated warnings against bathing in the river, the panchayat continued to receive complaints that some people were ignoring the rules and entering the water. Following these complaints, the panchayat administration officially announced a complete ban on bathing at Ubho Guno and other dangerous locations. Citizens have been urged to strictly follow the instructions, and authorities have clarified that strict action will be taken against violators.

Commenting on the matter, Sattari Deputy Collector Laxmikant Kuttikar said the administration had seriously considered the rising number of drowning incidents while implementing emergency management guidelines.

“Accordingly, panchayats have been instructed to implement necessary precautionary measures and strictly prevent public entry into dangerous river stretches,” said Kuttikar.

When contacted, Morlem Sarpanch Amit Shirodkar said that a large number of people visit the Ubho Guno area for bathing.

“However, the river stretch is highly dangerous and several unfortunate incidents have already taken place there in the past. To prevent such tragedies from happening again, the panchayat has imposed the restriction as a precautionary measure,” he said.
