The Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) celebrated Tiatr Day at its Conference Hall in Campal on Friday, with speakers emphasising the need to preserve the State’s rich tiatr tradition and encourage wider participation in the art form.

Senior tiatrist Tomazinho Cardozo, who attended as Chief Guest, called for Tiatr Day to be celebrated on a grand scale every year. He urged artistes to actively contribute towards keeping the traditional Konkani theatre form alive.

The function, organised by TAG, highlighted the cultural and social importance of tiatr, which has long served as a medium of expression and social commentary in Goa. Senior tiatrist C. D’Silva was the Guest of Honour.

Welcoming the gathering, TAG President Anthony Barbosa stressed that tiatr must not be allowed to fade with time. He underscored the need to encourage young talent to take interest in the art form and contribute to its growth.

In his address, Cardozo reiterated that Tiatr Day should be observed on a larger scale and appealed to tiatrists across Goa to celebrate the occasion with enthusiasm to strengthen the State’s cultural roots.

As part of the programme, D’Silva paid tribute to departed artistes through a song. The event began with a floral tribute to prominent tiatr personalities, including Lucasinho Ribeiro, Joao Agostinho Fernandes, Regina Fernandes, Antonio Moraes and Rosario Rodrigues, in recognition of their contributions.

Renowned singer Hema Sardesai, who was present at the event, highlighted the close link between tiatr and the Konkani language, urging people to preserve both as integral parts of Goan identity.

Fr. Luis Gomes lauded TAG’s efforts in promoting tiatr and said steps are being taken to secure UNESCO recognition for the art form. He also commended the Academy’s leadership and the UNESCO Task Force Committee for their dedication.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Fr. Doel Dias. TAG Member Secretary Carlos Fernandes was present on the dais. The programme was compered by Pradeep Naik and saw a good turnout of tiatrists and enthusiasts.
