The arrest of a police constable for allegedly smuggling narcotics into the Colvale Central Jail is expected to widen the scope of the investigation, with jail authorities likely to come under the scanner for possible lapses, raising serious concerns over internal security and monitoring mechanisms within the prison system.
According to sources, the constable was caught red-handed during a planned operation carried out by law enforcement authorities, who had been tracking suspicious movements and possible links between jail staff and inmates.
During the operation, officials seized approximately 165 grams of suspected ganja from his possession. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused was allegedly supplying the contraband to inmates lodged inside the jail, pointing to a possible breach of protocol and misuse of official access.
Authorities are now probing whether the constable was acting alone or as part of a larger network facilitating the flow of narcotics into the correctional facility.
The accused has been taken into custody, and further interrogation is underway. Police are also examining call records, financial transactions, and possible accomplices, both within and outside the jail premises.
Senior officials are expected to initiate a departmental inquiry alongside the criminal investigation.
Meanwhile, jail authorities may face scrutiny over lapses in surveillance and frisking procedures that allowed the alleged smuggling attempt. Further developments are awaited as the investigation progresses, with officials not ruling out more arrests in the coming days.
