Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said authorities have assured that at least one side of the Dabolim flyover will open by the end of May, or early June, to ease traffic congestion and reduce inconvenience to commuters.
Godinho was speaking after an on-site inspection of the ongoing flyover works at Dabolim, accompanied by officials from the PWD, Chicalim Panchayat, highway authorities and MVR. The visit focused on reviewing progress and addressing long-pending concerns of locals affected by the project.
“We reviewed the works after a detailed meeting with officials. There is a clear assurance that one carriageway will be made operational within the next few weeks so that the public gets some relief,” he said.
A key highlight of the inspection was the decision to use a large space beneath the flyover for community purposes.
Godinho said the area would be developed into a landscaped garden with seating, lighting and other basic amenities. It will also be reserved for the annual Dabolimcha Raja Ganesh celebrations, which draw large crowds from across the State.
“During construction, a large shed built by Chicalim Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav for Ganesh celebrations had to be removed. At that time, we assured the organisers that an alternative of similar scale would be provided. Now, the authorities and contractor have agreed to allocate a spacious area under the flyover for the same purpose, which will also serve as a public garden throughout the year,” he said.
The minister also addressed concerns about the Datta Mandir that was shifted during the flyover construction. He said the temporary structure would be replaced with a proper temple.
“People have deep faith in this temple. I have directed the contractor to build a well-designed temple in place of the current small structure provided during the shifting process. An architect has already been assigned, and the new temple will be built as per a proper plan,” he added.
Godinho further said that road works in the area would be sped up, with tarring to be completed before the end of the month to ensure the stretch is ready ahead of the monsoon.
