Sporting Club Davorlim edged Chandor Club 1-0 to book their place in the semi-finals of the 51st Chandor Seamen Trophy Football Tournament at the Chandor Church Complex ground on Wednesday. In a closely contested first quarter-final, both teams battled for the breakthrough but remained goalless for most of the match.
Davorlim finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute through Ajay Raj. Chandor pressed for an equaliser, but Davorlim’s defence held firm to secure the narrow victory. Ajay Raj was adjudged Player of the Match and received the award from Chandor Club managing committee member Andrew Peixote. The tournament is organised by Chandor Club. In Thursday’s fixture, Don Bosco Oratory will take on Shiroda Youth Club in a pre-quarter-final at the Chandor Church Complex ground.
Footballer dies after drowning off Baga
PANAJI: Young footballer Agnelo Fernandes died after reportedly falling from a fishing boat while fishing off Baga, according to sources. Fernandes was taken to the Primary Health Centre at Candolim, where doctors declared him brought dead. Fernandes was associated with St Savio Sports Club. His death has left members of Goa’s football fraternity mourning the loss of the young player.
Goa Football Association (GFA) North Goa vice-president Jonathan de Sousa expressed grief over Fernandes’ death and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and friends. Former India captain Climax Lawrence, All India Football Federation (AIFF) women’s football committee chairperson Valanka Alemao and Sporting Clube de Goa head coach Savio Vaz were also among those who expressed condolences.
Gatka State championship on Aug 30
PANAJI: The Gatka Association of Goa, in collaboration with St Joseph High School, Karai, Shiroda, will organise the State-level Gatka Championship on August 30 at 10 am at the school hall. Around 280 athletes representing 32 schools from across Goa are expected to participate. Competitors aged between five and 21 will take part in individual soti (stick fighting) and weapons demonstration events. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top performers, while the school winning the highest number of medals will receive the championship trophy. Trophies will also be presented to the runner-up and second runner-up schools.
