A stormy meeting of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday ended with the council deciding to temporarily hand over about 9,000 square metres of HPCL land to KTCL to shift its bus stand operations, despite strong objections from several councillors.
The proposal, placed at short notice, led to heated exchanges, with members questioning the lack of detailed information on the proposed KTCL bus stand project under a PPP model. Concerns were also raised about traffic congestion in Vasco due to increased bus movement.
Councillor Deepak Naik criticised the lack of transparency and demanded a detailed presentation. “We agreed only for temporary use of the land, but we need full clarity on the project,” he said, warning of protests if information was withheld.
Ward councillor Priya Raut opposed the move, saying the site, located near a fish and vegetable market, could pose safety risks. “The movement of nearly 80 buses daily will increase the chances of accidents. The resolution was passed without a traffic report or proper presentation,” she said.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said the land was considered due to lack of space and had been inspected by authorities. He added that a detailed presentation would be arranged later.
