In a noteworthy programme, thousands of students across schools and higher institutions will be mentored by professors teaching in engineering, medical and other colleges to imbibe in them a scientific temper and love for science, mathematics and engineering.

The 'Vigyan Dhara 2024' which will involve 500-odd lectures being delivered across these institutions is aimed at reaching out to nearly 75,000 students both in schools as well as higher education institutions with the aim of creating in them an interest for subjects like science, mathematics and engineering.

The programme will run through January and February.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, inaugurated the programme at an event where Education Secretary, Prasad Lolayenkar, IAS, Director of Higher Education, Bhushan Sawaikar and other officials were present.

Through 'Vigyan Dhara' professors teaching in universities, engineering and medical colleges will visit schools and higher education institutions to guide students there.

Speaking at the event, Sawant said, scientists working at National Research Institutes will also be involved in guiding and mentoring school and college students during the programme.

He added, that several students have a phobia for subjects like mathematics and science and cannot, despite having a desire, opt for medical or engineering courses because of which the 'Vigyan Dhara' was designed so this fear can be overcome.

Sawant also said that the programme will help develop a scientific attitude in school children and the wall of fear between students and science can be demolished.

Sawant also gave the example of the recently opened STEM pilot lab in a primary school in Harvalem where science, technology, engineering and mathematics are taught in a simplified way.

"In some time, we will try to set up such stem laboratories in one school in each taluka," Sawant said.
