In a bizarre decision which has communal overtones, the Verla-Canca gram sabha on Sunday unanimously resolved not to allow people belonging to the minority community in the village besides writing to the deputy collector against noise pollution for using amplified sound.

The locals also raised the issue of tenant verification and houses given on rent.

Some villagers brought to the attention of the panchayat that around 150 to 200 people were illegally gathering at D’Mello-vaddo, Canca.

They said these people were not from the village but were migrants who came from other places on Fridays and other occasions and used amplified sound which went on till late night.

“Unfamiliar people come together in the village causing inconvenience to local residents. They move around till late in the night raising concerns about security among the villagers,” said Sudesh Kinlekar, a resident of the village.

The villagers wanted to know whether the panchayat had issued any permission to one Abdul Khalid Carol to conduct the alleged illegal activities.

Kinlekar asked the panchayat to issue notice to the person and also write to the police.

Another local resident Jayesh Thali said the situation was sensitive and the panchayat should act against the gathering.

“It is our responsibility to maintain peace and harmony in the village and the panchayat should take systematic action in the matter,” said Thali, who is a member of Hindu Janjagruti Samiti.

Raising the issue of tenant verification, the villagers said a survey should be done and a list prepared of people staying on rental.

Sarpanch Aarti Chari said that the panchayat will soon issue a public notice asking locals to register their commercial establishments and houses given on rent.

A local, Dominic Correra raised the issue of illegal massage parlour which is being run in a bungalow and demanded action against it.

The sarpanch assured to look into the matter.
