Konkani lecturer dies after car allegedly driven on wrong side collides with scooter; locals blame rash driving on NH66

A 27-year-old assistant professor of Konkani at the Shri Mallikarjun & Chetan Manju Desai College died in a road mishap at Mashem-Canacona early Tuesday morning.
The death of Suchita Bandekar of Dhulgali in Shelim-Canacona shocked people across Canacona taluka, with many alleging that rash driving, particularly by outstation vehicles, has been unchecked, particularly on the NH66 in Canacona, which has witnessed several mishaps claiming the lives of innocent people.
According to Canacona Police, Chandrakant Pednekar of Kodibag-Karwar drove a car in a rash and negligent manner while proceeding from Canacona towards Karwar.
At Dapot-Mashem, the car went on the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming scooter.
As a result, the rider, Suchita Bandekar, and the scooter were flung several metres away, with the rider sustaining severe injuries. Bandekar succumbed to her injuries after being shifted to the Canacona CHC.
The impact of the accident was such that the scooter was mangled, while the car was also severely damaged.
Police registered a case and booked the driver under Sections 281 and 106(1) of BNS, and further investigation is being carried out by Canacona PSI Shivram Gauns.
