A 32-year-old fraud accused, who had escaped from Bengaluru police custody, was apprehended by the Panaji Coastal Security Police in a coordinated operation in Goa.

A press release issued by the Goa police on Wednesday stated that the accused, identified as Gagan Deep N, a native of Chikballapur in Karnataka, was earlier arrested by Bengaluru City Police on March 31, for allegedly defrauding a Bengaluru-based charitable trust of around Rs 6.30 crore by impersonating an official of a reputed multinational company.

He was brought to Goa on April 3 by the Bengaluru Police for the recovery of part of the defrauded amount, which he had reportedly spent at a casino. However, on the night of April 4, he allegedly escaped custody from the casino premises by taking advantage of the crowd and pushing the escorting personnel.

Following a complaint lodged by Police Inspector Rakesh C of Devanahalli Police Station, the Panaji Coastal Security Police registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and launched an investigation.

“The accused was subsequently traced to Dodamarg and apprehended from an eco-farm location. He was brought back to Goa and placed under arrest. He will be handed over to the Bengaluru Police for further investigation,” said the police.
