PANAJI
The internecine dispute within the Goa Bhandari Samaj deepened on Friday as senior samaj member Devanand Naik declared that the May 10 general body meeting convened by the government-appointed administrator was not in line with rules.
Naik told reporters at a press conference in Panaji on Friday that the meeting, originally slated to decide the procedure and timeline for electing the central executive committee, will no longer discuss elections following a High Court order.
“The agenda on elections has been struck off. There will be no discussion on the committee polls,” he said, flanked by some other former office-bearers.
The administrator had issued a notice on April 25 calling the meeting. However, member Suresh Kalangutkar challenged the election agenda in court.
The Court directed the removal of the agenda point meant to discuss elections of the central executive committee, prompting the administrator to issue a corrigendum.
Naik alleged that some individuals were misleading members of the samaj about the agenda and said Friday’s press conference was meant to clarify the issue.
Naik further questioned the legality of the administrator’s appointment, stating that the government failed to issue a show-cause notice before appointing one on March 4.
“We filed a petition on March 7. Hearing is expected in June after the court's summer recess. We are confident of getting justice and may even approach a higher court if needed,” he said, adding that his group will boycott the May 10 meeting.
He also warned of financial strain, noting that the administrator’s salary, allowances, and expenses are being charged to the Samaj’s account.
“The society’s finances are already weak. The appointment of administrator has only added to the burden,” Naik said.
