AG hails move as both timely and necessary
PANAJI
The Goa government has approved a draft Advocate Protection Bill aimed at safeguarding lawyers from threats and assaults, a move hailed as both timely and necessary by the State’s Advocate General, Devidas Pangam.
The cabinet gave its nod to the legislation on Friday last, paving the way for its introduction in the ongoing Assembly session.
Pangam has welcomed the decision and underscored the importance of extending such legal safeguards across the country.
“Goa will become the third State in India to enact a law for the protection of lawyers. Given the rising incidents of intimidation and attacks, this is a crucial step,” he said.
The Advocate General pointed out that lawyers often face harassment, threats, and even physical assaults during court proceedings or while handling sensitive cases.
In recent weeks alone, three to four such incidents have been reported in Goa, he noted.
“Doctors already enjoy statutory protection. It is only fair that lawyers, who play a vital role in upholding justice, receive similar safeguards,” Pangam added.
The proposed law is expected to provide a legal framework to deter violence against advocates and ensure swift action against offenders.
Pangam emphasized that the measure is not only about protecting individual lawyers but also about preserving the integrity of the justice delivery system.
Welcoming the government’s initiative, he said the legal fraternity stands united in support of the bill.
“On behalf of the lawyers, and personally, I thank the government for this decision. It is indeed a matter worthy of appreciation,” Pangam remarked.
If passed by the Assembly, Goa will join two other States that have already enacted similar legislation, setting a precedent for others to follow in strengthening protections for legal professionals nationwide.
