Amid the glut, agents are reportedly offering very low prices to farmers, citing weak demand. They have also pointed to a shortage of labour for harvesting and rising wage costs as contributing factors.
In several instances, even premium-quality mangoes are being priced as low as Rs 5 per fruit at the farm level, sparking outrage among growers. In stark contrast, the same produce is being sold in retail markets at prices reaching up to Rs 700 per dozen, exposing a wide gap between farmgate and consumer prices.
Farmers allege that there is little effective government regulation to check such disparities.
