With drinking water shortages reported in several villages of Sattari taluka, the government is taking steps to provide a long-term solution. A Rs 100 crore water treatment project at Morle is in its final stage and is expected to be completed within the next two months. The project aims to solve drinking water problems in Morle, Honda, Pissurle and Bhironda.

Heavy Dependence on Tankers

At present, around 11 villages in the taluka depend on water tankers. Once the project is completed, this dependence is expected to reduce significantly, ensuring a more stable supply. Earlier, water was supplied from the Dabos project at Vaifali–Dabos. However, due to the remote location and low pressure, enough water does not reach these areas. Although the Water Supply Department is providing tanker services, residents have complained about irregular supply and delays, which have worsened the situation.

Progress of project

The Morle water treatment project is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore. Water from the Valvanti river will be stored by the Irrigation Department and then sent to the treatment plant. After treatment, it will be supplied to various villages.

While the Irrigation Department has completed its work, the Water Supply Department’s work is still ongoing. Officials are confident the project will be finished within the next two to three months.

Areas to Benefit

The project will directly benefit four major panchayats—Morle, Honda, Pissurle and Bhironda. Parts of the Parye panchayat will also receive water from this project.

Due to mining activities in these areas, natural water sources have depleted, leading to ongoing shortages. The project is expected to provide a lasting solution.

MLA’s Statement

Local MLA Dr Deviya Rane said the project is important to tackle future water scarcity.

“Water is essential, and ensuring proper supply to people is the main aim of this project. Work is moving quickly and will be completed in a few months,” she said.

She added that this could be the first permanent solution to water problems in the constituency since Goa’s liberation.
