A serious accident took place on Sunday at Nanoda in Bicholim taluka, when a private mini-bus and a Thar vehicle collided head-on. The mini-bus, carrying passengers from Assonora to Ibrampur, was struck by the Thar coming from the opposite direction. Both vehicles were badly damaged in the impact.
There were around 25 to 30 passengers in the mini-bus. Of these, 16 were injured and were taken to the Community Health Centre in Bicholim. After treatment, some were discharged, while one critically injured person was shifted to the Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim. Three passengers are still undergoing treatment at the Bicholim Community Health Centre.
A team from Bicholim police is investigating the accident, and inquiries are ongoing. No fatalities have been reported.
Local residents have expressed concern over the incident. They said that with several small and large farmhouses in the Latambarcem panchayat area, many tourists visit on weekends. Some visitors allegedly drive under the influence of alcohol after parties, leading to a rise in accidents.
Residents have demanded increased police patrolling, especially on Saturdays and Sundays, and strict action against drunk driving.
Meanwhile, local MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye visited the site and enquired about the condition of the injured.
