Activist Dr Jorson Fernandes has criticised the Margao Municipal Council for allegedly harassing waste collection workers and urged workers to fight injustice using the Constitution of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. He was speaking at a Bhimshakti Sangatan programme marking Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary. He said oppressive treatment of workers resembled colonial-era injustice and alleged misuse of public funds through sanitation and licence fees without providing protective gear. Savio Coutinho alleged that some workers are paid without work while daily wage staff are made to work even on holidays. He also said 12 workers’ dues remain unpaid despite High Court orders, forcing contempt proceedings. Coutinho assured support to workers. Rajan Ghate spoke on constitutional means to resist oppression in Margao today.
