MARGAO
Death of a 50-year of migrant worker from Odisha after suffering from diarrhoea has thrown up question over the exact cause of death, triggering scare at the Cutbona fishing jetty.
A number of suspected diarrhoea cases and one cholera case have been detected amongst migrant workers at the Cutbona fishing jetty so far in the new fishing season that started from August 1.
The 50-year old labourer Debachan Kisan, a native of Odisha was declared brought dead at the South Goa district hospital on Thursday.
Acting upon information received from the Casualty Police of South District Hospital Margao, informing that one person brought dead, the Cuncolim police initiated an inquiry with family members, boat owner and other labourers and it was revealed that the deceased was suffering from diarrhoea on August 29.
Accordingly, Kisan was admitted to South District Hospital Margao and was undergoing treatment from August 29 till September 2. Police inquiries have further revealed that Kisan was discharged from the hospital on September 3. He is believed to have gone to sleep after having dinner on the same day.
The police inquiry has further revealed that Kisan had a glass of water in the wee hours of Thursday at around 6 am before going to sleep again.
As he was found in an unconscious stage, he was taken to the local doctor and thereafter South Goa District Hospital Margao where he declared brought dead by on duty doctor.
Cuncolim police station in-charge, PI Diego Gracias informed that the body is preserved at the South Goa district hospital mortuary after the inquest panchanama for further medico-legal formalities.
Asked whether the labourer has died due to suspected diarrhoea/cholera, PI Diego said it could be a suspected case of diarrhoea given that the deceased was suffering from loose motion. He, however, said the post mortem examination may shed light on the cause behind the death.
As a precautionary measure, the Cuncolim police has dashed off a letter to the Health Officer of the Primary Health Centre, having jurisdiction of the Cutbona fishing jetty, for information.
Last month, over 19 cases of suspected diarrhoea cases and a lone case of cholera case were detected from the Cutbona fishing jetty as per the information provided by the South Goa district Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS after a meeting with the stakeholders held to review the diarrhoea /cholera cases at the Cutbona fishing jetty.
