Yuri urges CM to revoke nod

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has upped the ante against the proposed fish meal plant at Cuncolim as he dashed off a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other concerned departments to revoke permission granted to the fish meal plant.
Alemao’s letter assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the Cuncolim Municipal Council has convened a special meeting of the Council on September 9 to deliberate and discuss the application received by the civic body for construction of a shed and compound wall for the proposed fish meal plant.
In his letter, Alemao said that the decision of revoking permission would be in the best interest of the area and its residents, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being.
“As you are aware, the existing fish meal production plants in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate are operating without Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), causing significant pollution, health risks, and contamination of water bodies. The people of Cuncolim have been steadfast in their opposition to these plants for years, and I have consistently raised concerns about their detrimental impact,” LoP Alemao stated in his letter.
He said that findings of a survey conducted by the Primary Health Centre-Balli has revealed an alarming rise in respiratory problems, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and psoriasis among residents due to pollution in Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
He reminded the Chief Minister about his assurance in the House that the government would not allow new fish meal plants in Cuncolim.
